Fix the process first, then automate it

Dominion TechOps builds and runs automation and software for UK businesses. Most business software is a sticking plaster over a broken process, so we start with the process.

Dominion TechOps was founded by Dom Mills, our director.

Dom’s career has been in insurance IT and operations, inside back offices rather than advising them from outside: lists chased three times, the same data keyed into three systems, reports that always land late.

We also build and run what we build. Dom is a director of Hockey’s Farm Shop, his family’s business in the New Forest. Its operations run every day on a platform we designed and maintain: customer app, staff app, till to accounts and wages. Being on the receiving end of our own systems keeps the work practical. If something is awkward to use, we hear about it the same day.

Beyond Hockey’s there is client work for The Pets, Homes and Gardens Company and Adam Sidford Gardens. Then there are our own products: two live and two more in build.

How we work

You have one named lead from the first call to the handover. The person who maps your workflow is the person who builds the automation, so nothing is lost in translation and there is never a question about who to call.

Writing the code is the easy part of automating a back office. The skill is knowing which step to remove and what breaks downstream when you do. That takes operations experience as well as the skills to build. You get both on every project.

We start small on purpose. One workflow, measured and automated in two weeks, so you see a result before you commit to anything bigger. We’re insured, with professional indemnity and public liability cover.

What we build

Every build is shaped around your workflow rather than taken off a shelf. The pieces that come up again and again are:

  1. Reading documents for you

    Invoices, statements and orders read automatically and the details posted where they belong, so nobody has to rekey them.

  2. Connecting your systems

    Your till, accounts, rota, email and spreadsheets passing information to each other without a person in the middle.

  3. Checks that run themselves

    Rotas, figures and records checked against the rules before anything goes out, with anything that needs a person flagged clearly.

Remote by default, local when it helps

Most of the work is delivered remotely, by choice: back-office work already lives in email, portals and spreadsheets, so mapping, building and handing over an automation can all happen over video and screen share.

That means we can work with businesses anywhere in the UK, with no travel cost in the price. If you’re in Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire or West Sussex and would rather meet in person, we’re based in the New Forest and happy to come to you.
